Bruce was employed as a code enforcement officer with the town of Wells. He previously worked as a police officer for both the town of Wells and Old Orchard Beach, and was a member of the call fire department. He was also a former animal control officer and was outspoken on animal welfare issues.

She was born March 26, 1922, in Madison, the daughter of Merle and Beryl (Fletcher) Yeaton. The family shortly thereafter moved to Massachusetts, and she was raised in the Framingham-Natick area, graduating from Framingham High School in 1940.
In 1941 she married Stanley R. Atwell. Soon after World War II, the family moved to Maine, ending up in Farmington, where they raised their family.
